GALVESTON, Texas – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Galveston District, awarded a contract May 23 to Babcock Construction Company LLC, a service disabled veteran owned small business, in the amount of $1,145,560 for levee repairs and shoreline protection at the Pelican Island placement area in Galveston County, Texas.

“This work will allow us to ensure the levees remain stable for future raisings during maintenance dredging,” said James Worthington, a project manager with USACE Galveston. “A contract crew will conduct repair work in order to strengthen the levees at the site during this project.”

According to Worthington, the Pelican Island placement area serves as an active placement area for dredged material to be placed when the western portion of the Galveston Harbor Ship Channel is dredged.

“In addition to levee repairs, we will place rocks along a portion of the levees as part of the shoreline protection,” said Worthington. “These rocks will help protect the integrity of the levees for future maintenance dredging cycles by reducing the potential for erosion.”

Work is scheduled to begin in early July and is expected to be completed in early November 2011.
