BAGRAM AIR FIELD, Afghanistan – The 9th Commando Kandak responded to a suicide bombing conducted by insurgents, against the Ministry of Transportation and the Italian Provincial Reconstruction Team’s Headquarters, Herat City, May 30.
The attack, which resulted in the death of four civilians and another 33 injured, began when one suicide bomber detonated his vest at the PRT gate. This created an entry point allowing insurgents to file into the compound, establish fighting positions, and fire on NATO soldiers, according to reports.
Operating unilaterally, the Commandos initiated a quick reaction force, moving into the city and securing the Italian PRT building; the Governor of Herat’s office; and the Bagh-e-Azadi.
Once they arrived at the PRT, the Commandos entered and cleared the four-story building, killing the remaining insurgents inside.
One Commando was killed in action and seven were wounded.
The Commandos cleared the PRT thoroughly and efficiently, removing all men, women and children, resulting in no further civilian casualties.
