Normally, squadrons hold family days to incorporate the military families, but this event was meant to support the Marines who don’t necessarily have immediate family nearby.

Different from normal events, Afterburners held its first Barracks Bash for Marine Aircraft Group 31 Headquarters Squadron May 19. The event was held to give the Marines, who live in the barracks, a fun activity to raise their morale before the weekend.

The event invited the Marines out for barbeque, drinks and games to enjoy before the weekend began.

“This was sort of a way to get the troops together for something fun and was a way for the commanding officer to give his thanks to the Marines’ hard work before leaving the squadron,” said Ted Crandall, the family readiness officer for MAG-31.

Before the festivities could begin, Staff Sgt. Ronald Dorval, the career planner, gave a brief on reenlisting within the Corps. He covered topics from basic requirements as well as what other options they would have once they decided to serve another term.

Once the brief finished, they gathered for the invocation given by Chaplain Felder, which invoked good spirits among the Marines. Then, from the lowest rank to the highest, they lined up indoors to indulge in the meal that was prepared for them by Marine Corps Community Services.

The Stingers headquarters section works hard like all the different parts of the squadron, ensuring their mission is met. However, while they work hard to complete the mission, their chain of command and FRO stay aware of their need to relax as well.

Immediately, the Marines took off to settle themselves where they felt comfortable, some stayed outside for the outdoor sports, others went inside to cool off and play the game consoles and pool tables.

Those he didn’t take refuge form the warm weather managed to heat up their own competition on basketball court. Gunnery Sgt. Antonio Darby, the MAG-31 operations chief and Tiffany Labarre, the MAG-31 S-1 non-commissioned officer in charge played a game and even the CO joined in the Marines fun.

“Sgt. Labarre went easy on me I could tell,” said Lt. Col. Wade Wiegel the Marine Aircraft Group 31 Headquarters Squadron.

Normally, squadrons hold family days to incorporate the military families, but this event was meant to support the Marines who don’t necessarily have immediate family nearby.

“This is for the Marines to enjoy and I’m glad we did this,” Wiegel said.
