VALLEY CITY, N.D.— Gov. Jack Dalrymple and First Lady Betsy Dalrymple met with Barnes County and Valley City officials today and visited with some of the nearly 300 North Dakota National Guard members who are helping the community combat spring flooding.
The governor and first lady met with local officials at 4 p.m. at Valley City’s City Hall. Dalrymple was informed that the first phase of the levee re-enforcements throughout town has been completed. Phase 2, which includes protecting Valley City State University, is expected to be completed tomorrow.
Phase 3 involves the construction of contingency levees and is expected to be done by Tuesday, if not sooner.
Following the flood response briefing from local officials, the governor and first lady were escorted by Capt. Anna Wittrock, officer in charge of the 231st Brigade Support Battalion, and 1st Lt. Robbie Hertz, with Company A of the 231st Brigade Support Battalion, to visit with North Dakota National Guard members working along the Sheyenne River to build up the levees to the 24-foot mark in anticipation of record water levels.
Dalrymple surveyed a levee-building team consisting of Soldiers from the 817th Engineer (Sapper) Company, from Jamestown, N.D., working with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and contractors to strengthen a dike in a residential area. The first lady brought home-baked cookies that she passed out to the Guardsmen that had been working many hours throwing sandbags in the chilly weather.
Dalrymple said he was very impressed with the progress made in the past few days and said the communities always appreciates the help of the National Guard.
