Story by Cpl. Samuel A. Nasso

    II Marine Expeditionary Force

Sgt. Tai Tran is the non-commissioned officer in charge of the maintenance section of Marine Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Squadron 2. He is 25 years old, joined in May 2006, hometown is Concord Calif., graduated Clayton Valley High School in 2003 and attended the University of California at Davis to study aeronautical engineering.

    Q: What’s your job?

A: I maintain the RQ-7B Shadow aircraft so it is mission ready for reconnaissance missions, force protection missions and for base security.

Q: What’s your favorite aspect of your job?

A: It has to be seeing my Marines grow. Coming here are 18 and 19 year old kids and to see them grow and understand our job and role in the Marine Corps is great.

Q: What’s the most challenging part?

A: The hardest aspect of our job would have to be finding and replacing the parts that need to be fixed. But all in all maintaining the aircraft is simple after working with it for awhile.

Q: How does your job support the mission of 2nd MAW and MCAS Cherry Point?

A: We provide intelligence, reconnaissance, surveillance and act as eyes in the sky for the troops on the ground. We act as a satellite to many of the Marines on the ground and really whenever they are unsure of something and need a better look, we can provide it for them.

Q: How does your job differ from garrison to the field?

A: While we’re deployed we are launching aircraft day in and day out, conducting 24-hour operations. Here it is more relaxed and low-tempo.
