3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division

KHOWST PROVINCE, Afghanistan – Last week, two soldiers of Task Force Duke re-enlisted on Forward Operating Base Salerno, Afghanistan as their husbands watched, despite being thousands of miles away.

The re-enlistment ceremonies for Staff Sgt. Wentreyell Grant, noncommissioned officer in charge of the FOB Salerno Directorate of Information Management and native of Mobile, Ala.; and Staff Sgt. Bobbi Augustyn, a career counselor for 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, Task Force Duke, and native of Sargent, Neb.; were held on March 27 and 22, respectively and both were streamed live over the internet so that their families back home could watch.

Grant’s husband, U.S. Army Sfc. Michael A. Grant, watched the ceremony from Fort Jackson, S.C.; while Augustyn’s husband, James Cannon, viewed the feed from their Fort Knox, Ky., home.

Both men had to adjust their personal schedules significantly to adapt to the eight and a half hour time difference between their locations.

Getting up early, however, is no problem for Michael, who is a drill sergeant and no stranger to long hours and early mornings.

Cannon, a civilian, was glad for the opportunity to be a part of his wife’s ceremony and commitment to further service, he said.

“It’s not every day that you get to go to your wife’s re-enlistment ceremony in Afghanistan,” said Cannon.
