    Commandos, USSF find weapon caches in Konar

    NATO Special Operations Component Command-Afghanistan

    KONAR PROVINCE, Afghanistan – Soldiers from 3rd Company, 1st Commando Kandak and Special Operations Task Force – East discovered three large weapon caches in Sirankay Valley, Konar province, March 30 – April 1.

    The Afghan-led force was conducting a three-day clearing operation in the area to disrupt insurgent safe havens when the caches were discovered as they moved through the valley.

    The caches included 200 fragmentary grenades, 22 rocket-propelled grenades, seven sniper rifles, 2 AK-47 assault rifles, 1,000 rounds of ammunition, several varieties of mortar rounds and improvised explosive device making materials including 50 fuses and chemical mixtures.

    The munitions were destroyed on site.
