NORFOLK, Va. - In the spirit of giving back to the community, a group of chief petty officers from Commander, U.S. Second Fleet volunteered their time at Habitat for Humanity’s General Store in Norfolk, Va., March 29.

Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit organization that builds homes for selected families using volunteer labor, donated materials, and financial contributions.

“This is a great opportunity to give back to an organization that helps out so many people in our community,” said Dave Perrin, chief aerographer’s mate. “Without volunteers they wouldn’t be able to do what they do, so I am more than happy to lend a hand so they can continue to do great things for Hampton Roads families.”

The chiefs assisted with sorting, staging and straightening thousands of pieces of floor tile.

“We are so grateful to have had the Second Fleet CPOs volunteer at our Tidewater Drive store because without volunteers we would not be able to achieve our mission,” said Sally Ellefson, Habitat for Humanity. “They help cut costs and it's motivating to see them give back to the community.”

Ellefson went on to say that it is because of volunteers they are able to do what they do for the local area.

“Without groups like the CPOs we would not be able to build affordable, decent homes and healthy vital communities by providing home ownership opportunities for qualified low-income families,” said Ellefson.

The chiefs in attendance were happy to lend a hand and put together several pallets of usable tile.

“We moved and organized a lot of tile today, so I hope a majority of it will be used in Habitat for Humanity homes,” said Carmelo Acevedo, chief electronics technician of Second Fleet.

As the piles of miscellaneous tile began to take shape in more organized piles, the chiefs felt an overwhelming sense of accomplishment.

“One of the best things we can do as citizens is give back to the community by volunteering,” said Will Grimm, senior chief fire controlman of Second Fleet. “Working with organizations like Habitat for Humanity allows us to make a real difference in a few short hours and get a refreshing break from the daily routine.”
