MAZAR-E SHARIF, Afghanistan – The German Minister of Defence completed a two-day visit to northern Afghanistan, March 27.
During his first trip to Afghanistan as the Minister of Defence, Dr. Thomas de Maizière first met with President Hamid Karzai and Commander, International Security Assistance Force U.S. Army Gen. David H. Petraeus in Kabul. He then visited Regional Command North, meeting with German Army Maj. Gen. Markus Kneip, commander, RC-North, and soldiers on Camp Marmal and Provincial Reconstruction Teams Kunduz and Feyzabad. Additionally, he paid his respects at each location’s fallen soldier memorial.
When meeting with commanders and troops, de Maizière thanked them for their service and stressed the importance of partnering with both ISAF and Afghan National Security Forces.
