HOUSTON – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Galveston District, awarded a contract March 7, to Terracon Consultants Inc. in the amount of $71,280.48 to provide laboratory testing of soil samples obtained from the Addicks and Barker Dams in Harris and Fort Bend counties, Texas.

Constructed in the 1940s, the Addicks and Barker dams and reservoirs are flood damage reduction projects designed to prevent downstream flooding of Buffalo Bayou in the City of Houston.

“The lab results will be used for preliminary designs that will be included in a Dam Safety Modification Study which is scheduled for completion later this year,” said Lori Thomas, chief of USACE Galveston’s Geotechnical and Structures Section. “The overall objective of this Dam Safety Modification Study is to identify permanent measures that will reduce risks associated with the dams.

According to Thomas, the Corps’ primary objective is to maintain public safety by ensuring the dams owned and operated by the federal government are safe and the risks to the public are minimized.
