SAN DIEGO -- Naval Medical Center San Diego’s command diversity team adopted Farb Middle School, Oct. 28, as part of a command community outreach effort.
NMCSD’s diversity team recently joined the Partnerships in Education program created by the San Diego Unified School District. The PIE program invites businesses, organizations and military commands to pair with a local school to foster relationships with the students.
“I'm thrilled about the partnership between Balboa [NMCSD] and Farb Middle School,” said Susan Levy, Farb Middle School principal. “Many of our parents are employed through Balboa and everyone has been excited about the prospects of a partnership. This partnership is one that is cherished and prized by our community and we are very excited. ”
The partnership is a project the diversity team created, which allows NMCSD staff members and volunteers to participate.
Since this is a newly implemented program, events and goals are currently being discussed with the school’s principal.
“Certain events we’d like to do include after school programs, tutoring, field trips and some kind of military appreciation day,” said Petty Officer 1st Class Jessica Bruce, command diversity team chairman and staff judge advocate leading petty officer. “The school is requesting an ROTC program for the students, and they want to set something up for children of deployed parents.”
Bruce became chairman of NMCSD’s diversity team in 2009 and has been renovating it ever since to fit the command’s needs and policies.
“I was already researching the program when I found an instruction saying we needed to partner with local schools for diversity pipeline and community relations,” said Bruce. “After that, the program was very easy to implement and we will begin working with the school in the next few weeks.”
The partnership will be reevaluated every year to ensure both groups are still benefiting from the program.
“Members of the command are excited to be able to have an opportunity to get involved with the community,” said Petty Officer 2nd Class Amber Bretzman, command diversity team vice chairman and health care business leading administrative petty officer. “Middle school age kids are at a very influential time in their lives and what members of NMCSD can give to the children at Farb middle school could very well pave the way for them to lead a successful life.”
The diversity team’s goals for fiscal 2011 include actively involving as many NMCSD staff member’s and volunteers to participate in the new partnership. The goal is that both students and staff participants will benefit from the partnership.
“I am hoping that participation in the program will not only enrich the lives of the students we will encounter but also the lives of those working with the students,” said Bretzman. “It is an excellent opportunity to be a mentor and positive role model.”
