GALVESTON, Texas -- The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Galveston District, awarded a contract, March 11, to Port Lavaca-based King Fisher Marine Service LP in the amount of $3,386,100 to dredge the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway in Aransas, Calhoun and San Patricio counties, Texas.
The contractor will use a pipeline dredge to remove approximately 1.5 million cubic yards of material from Turnstake Island to Live Oak Point.
"The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers plays a significant role in keeping America's waterways open and commerce flowing," said Wayne A. Boyd, president of King Fisher Marine Service. "We are proud to be a part of this project which will help maintain America’s marine infrastructure while providing 50 jobs for a project which is expected to last 120 days.”
Dredge work is expected to begin April 15, 2011.
According to Alicia Rea, a project operations manager with USACE Galveston, the dredged material will be relocated to a nearby placement area that has become a thriving habitat for endangered species including the Whooping Crane, which travels from Canada each year to winter in the area.
“Many of our placement areas have become ‘bird islands’ and wildlife sanctuaries for various species,” said Rea. “As a result, we dredge this particular area of the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway between April 15 and October 15 as to not disturb the endangered Whooping Crane.”
The USACE Galveston District awarded a total of 17 maintenance dredging contracts and obligated more than $200 million toward dredging efforts in fiscal year 2010 (from Oct. 1, 2009, through Sept. 30, 2010), including both new work, routine critical maintenance, dredge placement area work, gate maintenance at the Brazos River flood gates and dredge channels to restore to pre-storm conditions.
