    NATO Maritime Command Naples

    NAPLES, Italy - Vice Adm. Rinaldo Veri today assumed the duties of Commander, Allied Maritime Command Naples in a ceremony conducted on the Isle of Nisida, Naples.

    Veri succeeded Vice Adm. Maurizio Gemignani, who becomes Deputy Chief of the Italian Navy, during a ceremony presided over by Adm. Samuel J. Locklear III, commander, Allied Joint Force Command Naples. Commanders and representatives of Allied Navies together with local military, civilian and religious authorities were in attendance. The guest of honour was Admiral Bruno Branciforte Chief of the Italian Navy.

    In welcoming Vice Admiral Veri, Vice Admiral Gemignani stated that his successor would inherit a high calibre NATO staff whose strength and determination is reinforced by their multi-nationality. He also reminded those present that Commander, MC Naples responsibilities includes deployed maritime forces, “to whom I express my highest esteem and consideration for their tremendous professionalism, determination, and for the commitment with which they fulfill their tasks day by day, demonstrating a passion for and an awareness of the significant role played by this command and the entire Alliance”.


    In his remarks Locklear recalled firstly that he had found himself, as a junior office, visiting Nisida and thinking the area as being “dramatically beautiful” never imagining that he would one day have the privilege of standing there as the joint force commander presiding over such an important change of command. Locklear stated that he believes future historians will understand that NATO is “the most successful alliance of modern times”. He thanked Gemignani for his “visionary leadership” and reminded everyone of the critical support role given to alliance military by their families”

    Veri stressed the geo-strategic importance of the Mediterranean Sea and the critical role of the Maritime Command Naples in maintaining “direct visibility and monitoring of the operational situation”. He also committed himself to successfully fulfilling what he described as “a very exciting and demanding assignment”.
