NAPLES, Italy – The Standing NATO Mine Countermeasures Group 2, a NATO maritime force of five ships from four member nations will begin a routine port visit in Manama the capital of the Kingdom of Bahrain beginning March 11.
Beginning its deployment from Souda Bay in Crete, Feb. 1, the group sailed into the Persian Gulf, March 7 to carry out a month long deployment in the area on Operation INAS BAHR (Friendly Seas).
“We have been planning this visit of Mine Hunter ships to the Gulf for many months, so we are looking forward to this first port call and the others we will make in the region. These port calls are a big part of what the deployment is all about; they allow us to increase public awareness about NATO, which is an important priority when our ships visit any country,” said Capt. Pelekanis, Commander of SNMCMG2.
This deployment to the Gulf is aimed at promoting practical military cooperation with Istanbul Cooperation Initiative countries while fostering close links with regional navies and other maritime organizations. It represents an excellent opportunity for military dialogue to enhance understanding. It also aims to promote opportunities to achieve interoperability through active participation in selected military exercises.
