CAMP LEATHERNECK, Afghanistan – Afghan National Army soldiers took part in a generator repair course at the Joint Security Academy Southwest here, March 5.
The course teaches students about basic generator operating procedures, operation checks, post operation checks, general maintenance and grounding. Throughout the course the students perform hands-on training covering the lessons they’re taught.
“Basically, what we’re doing right now is giving them a general overview on how to perform maintenance and general operating procedures on the civilian gear along with our Marine Corps electrical power generators,” said Lance Cpl. Michael S. Gazey, an instructor with 8th Engineer Support Battalion, 2nd Marine Logistics Group.
Gazey, from Philadelphia, said the soldiers are learning quickly and grasping all the lessons.
“We are actually ahead of schedule because they’re learning very fast,” said Gazey. “We can’t go slowly because they learn way too quickly.”
Upon graduation, the students are expected to be able to perform everything necessary to keep a generator operational.
“When I graduate, I will be able to operate and maintain all kinds of generators at my unit,” said Rahimullah, from Nangarhar province, a student in the course. “I will be able to teach my colleagues the skills taught to me.”
“They’ve been doing excellent. They really like to get down and dirty and do all the work,” said Gazey.
