BAGHDAD, Iraq – The Italian Carabinieri of NATO Training Mission Iraq concluded the first specialized "building clearance” course for 43 policemen in the Iraqi Academy Emergency Reaction Department Nov. 8, 2010.
"NATO clearly demonstrates the strong commitment to the development of Iraqi security forces," said Lt. Gen. Michael Barbero, NTM-I commander, during a recent visit to the Carabinieri training area in Baghdad.
Conducted by a mobile special intervention group in the Carabinieri, the two-week course focused on movement techniques, arresting and shooting protocols, and searching and clearing activities in specific environments.
Iraq's Minister of the Interior requested assistance in these areas during the Second Joint Training Committee in Baghdad Oct. 19.
Italy's Carabinieri have been training Iraqi security forces and police since 2007 and have developed "on call” mobile teams to quickly respond to new training requests from Iraq's civilian leadership, such as the request for this course.
Training activities conducted by the NTM-I Carabinieri since 2007:
- 14 leadership training courses: 8823 officers, NCOs and policemen of the Iraqi Federal Police graduates
- T3 Course "Train the Trainers”: 133 basic trainers graduates
- T5 Course "Train the Trainers of the Trainers”: 30 advanced trainers graduates
- 1 "Building Clearance” course : 43 Iraqi policemen of the Iraqi Police Academy - Emergency Reaction Department

- 15th leadership training course: over 600 officers, NCOs and policemen of the Iraqi Federal Police
- 1st oil police Course: over 120 officers, NCOs and Officers of the Iraqi oil police
