BAGHDAD, Iraq – The first meeting of the Joint Committee for Future Training was conducted at the Babylon Conference Centre here Feb. 6.
The meeting between key leaders of NATO Training Mission-Iraq, the Iraqi Ministry of Defence, and Ministry of Interior, served as a mechanism to recommend and agree on future training considerations for Iraqi security forces. Additionally, members of Government of Iraq from the Prime Minister's Office and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs participated in the discussion.
The committee discussed implementation of a Structured Cooperation Framework that was endorsed by the Government of Iraq and NATO. In accordance with the SCF, NTM-I will serve as the single point of contact between NATO and the primary agencies within the GoI.
The conference was co-chaired by NTM-I Deputy Commander, Italian Army Maj. Gen. Claudio Angelelli; Iraqi MoD Deputy Chief of Staff for Training, staff Lt. Gen. Hussein Dohi; and the MoI Chief of the Training and Qualification Institute, staff Maj. Gen. Izzat Noel Aziz.
The co-chairs discussed the way ahead for the Joint Committee.
They also discussed training courses conducted outside Iraq, in which Iraqi Security Forces would travel to either NATO Training schools or two Turkish centres for excellence. The establishment of an Iraqi Coordination Cell, which will include representatives from MoD, MoI, PMO, MFA and NTM-I members, was also discussed.
