BAGHDAD, Iraq – On Feb. 5, U.S. Army Lt. Gen. Michael Ferriter, NATO Training Mission-Iraq commander, and Italian Army Maj. Gen. Claudio Angelelli, NTM-I deputy commander, visited Camp Dublin, which serves as the headquarters for the Gendarmerie Training Unit of the Italian Carabinieri. The visit marked the first trip to Dublin for Ferriter since took command of NTM-I in January.
During the visit Col. Fausto Vignola, commander of the Gendarmerie Training Division and Lt. Col. Robert Jervolino, commander Gendarmerie Training Unit, briefed Ferriter on the results the Italian Carabinieri has achieved in training the Iraqi Federal Police. Additionally, they provided an overview of the newly begun Oil Police course, which was added to the program of instruction in October 2010, at the request of the Iraqi Government.
Ferriter congratulated the Carabinieri for their achievements, which include having trained some 10,000 Iraqi police.
The Iraqi Federal Police Academy Commandant Staff Maj. Gen. Muntadhur Mohammad Fathi also met with Ferriter, and discussed the upcoming graduation of the second Oil Police training course that will occur later this month.
The visit concluded with a capabilities demonstration by Oil Police students highlighting their level of training proficiency in conducting pipeline control operations as well as escort and anti-terrorism operations.
Ferriter took time during the visit to talk with the students and congratulate them for their accomplishments and professionalism.
