KABUL, Afghanistan – Hala Hushawa, new director of women's affairs, held a humanitarian event at Forward Operating Base Rushmore, Paktika province, Feb. 10, handing out warm clothing to needy Afghan women and children.

Hushawa works closely with male government officials to build a better life for the Afghan women of Paktika. Her first major project is teaching girls the Quran and how to read and write.

“New to Paktika, she is a refreshing presence, determined to reach out to the hearts and speak to the minds of the people so they may embrace change,” said U.S. Navy Lt. Tamora Holland, physician assistant, Paktika Provincial Reconstruction Team.

Paktika Gov. Moheebullah Samim gave Hushawa additional funds for another women’s affairs representative.

Voice of Pashto and The National Voice of Paktika radio stations advertised the event a week prior and encouraged women to come receive needed winter clothing and toiletries. Hushawa permitted men to receive items for the women and children of their households.

“Anyone needy was welcomed to come,” Hushawa said.

Prior to the event, Hushawa received and organized the donations herself. The Paktika Provincial Reconstruction Team and female engagement team provided security and support to ensure the event was safe and successful.

“Any plan I have in this area, I want to make sure it is done right,” Hushawa said.

The humanitarian assistance event is a great example of Hushawa’s capabilities and just a sneak peak to what is about to come.

“In her eyes, today's event brought a real face of the Government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan to the men, women and children affected by the shortcomings of the economic system,” Holland said. “She wants the people to know their government is working hard to improve overall conditions and that GIRoA cares about their needs.”
