MAZAR-E SHARIF, Afghanistan – German Army Col. Jurgen Joachim von Sandrart relieved German Army Col. Frank Schmitz in a change of command ceremony held on Jan. 19 for the Operational Mentor and Liaison Team at Camp Shaheen.

The ceremony marked a change in leadership for the OMLT, which is tasked with mentoring the Afghan National Army’s 209th Corps.

The ceremony was attended by various guests including Commander, ISAF Regional Command North German Army Maj. Gen. Hans-Werner Fritz and Commander, Afghan National Army 209th Corps, Brig. Gen. Zalmay Wesa.

According to Wesa, teamwork and success were the hallmarks of Schmitz’s time with OMLT.

“During my four months in command of the 209th there have been many improvements,” said Wesa during a reception following the ceremony. “We encountered many minor and major problems. Colonel Schmitz worked with us and found solutions to these problems.”

Although remembering Schmitz’s service and commitment, Wesa said he is looking forward to working with von Sandrart and is confident that OMLT and the 209th will continue to work well together in building a better Afghanistan.

“It is the desire of all Afghans for there to be more development and more security,” said Wesa. “The 209th Corps, together with Col. von Sandrart and OMLT will continue to work towards improving life for Afghans and building a brighter future for Afghanistan.”
