BAGHDAD—Leaders with Company A, 299th “Lifeline” Brigade Support Battalion, 2nd Advise and Assist Brigade, 1st Infantry Division, United States Division – Center gathered to receive guidance Jan. 13 from Capt. Lillian Berry, commander of Company A, 299th BSB, 2nd AAB, 1st Inf. Div. at Camp Liberty, Iraq.
As part of Company A’s “Atlas Academy,” Berry instructed key company leaders on leadership styles, telling each of them—in the position of squad leader and higher—that every leader must be true to themselves in their leadership style and that a leader must be able to utilize various techniques unique to soldiers’ different personality types.
Berry said leaders should know their soldiers and continuously and meticulously enforce standards.
“I want every member (of Company A) to leave the company better than when they arrived and I think we are well on our way,” Berry said.
Following Berry’s remarks, Staff Sgt. Steven Goodwill, retention non-commissioned officer with 299th BSB, 2nd AAB, 1st Inf. Div. and a Canton, Ohio, native, presented a class on the Army’s current strength posture and what options are available for soldiers who want to continue their service and extending their enlistment.
The information was a major eye-opener for “Atlas” soldiers, Goodwill said.
“I thought the retention brief was the most helpful because I am interested in my reenlistment options,” said Cpl. James Hollinger, training non-commissioned officer with Company A, 299th BSB, 2nd AAB and an Aurora, Colo., native. “I think it was good because all the Soldiers were together right there to hear what they need to know.” said
To finish the first day of the Atlas Academy, Sgt. 1st Class Teddrick Campbell, first sergeant of Company A, 299th BSB, 2nd AAB and a Chicago native, led classes on the enlisted promotion system, career progression, warrant officer packets and the Army’s Green-to-Gold Program.
On the second day of training, officers within the company taught classes on proper preventive maintenance checks and services procedures, finance and composite risk management.
The soldiers also received information on finance, creating a budget and how to set up the Savings Deposit Program.
Berry said although this was the first Atlas Academy, it was a success. The training increased the company’s readiness and knowledge, enabling leaders and soldiers to be successful in future operations, personal affairs and their military careers.
