OKINAWA, Japan - Late-night television commercials and infomercials constantly hawk the latest “breakthrough weight-loss pill” or the newest way to “slim that waist.” But, the small print that flashes briefly a few times throughout those commercials and infomercials tell the real truth, “Results not typical.”
The key to a healthy lifestyle does not come from a magic pill or contraption. Instead, it is achieved by a healthy diet and regular physical activity.
Turbo kickboxing is one of the regular physical activities offered by Marine Corps Community Services Semper Fit to help people achieve this goal of staying healthy. The class combines several activities into a high-energy workout.
Turbo kickboxing is a choreographed kickboxing class, that uses a combination of intense kickboxing, martial arts and dance moves, said Jeannette Crow, a Richland, Wash. native, and MCCS Semper Fit instructor.
The 55-minute class of hooking, jabbing and kicking, is energetically lead by Crow, who challenges and motivates participants at the Ironworks Fitness Center on Camp Courtney.
“It’s the ultimate cardiovascular challenge,” said Crow. “It works your entire body.”
Healthy living and physical exercise can improve mood, combat chronic diseases, manage weight, boost energy levels and promote better sleeping habits. These are all things Marines need to stay healthy and ready for the next mission, according to Becky Javinar, MCCS Semper Fit Group fitness director.
In addition to turbo kickboxing, MCCS Semper Fit offers a variety of classes, such as spinning, abdominal classes, and yoga, to help service members, Department of Defense personnel, and their families stay fit and have fun at the same time.
