CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. -- A new online course has replaced the Marine Corps Institute printed version of Leading Marines. According to Marine Administrative Message 640/10, lance corporals must complete the Marine Net version, called the Leading Marines Distance Education Program, to be promotion eligible.

Come July 2011 the MCI Leading Marines will no longer be available.

“The Marine Corps is becoming more and more computers-based,” said Sgt. Joshua Busath, communications non-commissioned officer for I Marine Expeditionary Force Marine Headquarters Group. “They are able to put a more comprehensive class online rather than in a book.”

According to the MARADMIN, the new course aims to better support junior Marines’ development of essential leadership skills such as their critical thinking and making sound, ethical decisions. It’s designed to meet the operating forces expectations for Marines’ performance in current and future operational environments.

The new requirement consists of four sub-courses which Marines must pass to complete the Leading Marines DEP:
    1. Developing Leaders
    2. Leadership Tools
    3. Counseling, Coaching and Mentoring
    4. Command and Military Organization

Busath said once all the sub-courses are complete, they are automatically documented in the Marines basic training record on Marine Online.

Marines currently enrolled in the MCI must complete it by Dec. 31 or they will be disenrolled. Lance corporals who finish the MCI prior to Dec. 31 will be PME complete for grade. Being PME complete is a promotion requirement.

As of Jan. 1, the new Leading Marines DEP is available on MarineNet. Only lance corporals or higher can enroll.

“Marines can take the new course at the Learning Resource Center or with an available proctor,” Busath said. “The information on proctors should be available through a Marines training section.”
