KABUL, Afghanistan – The 1st Coy, 3rd Kandak of the Afghan National Army and U.S. Army soldiers with Company C, 1st Battalion, 168th Infantry Regiment visited Sar Mast Kheyl village in Zurmat District, Paktiya province recently.
During the visit, an impromptu meeting was held in which Afghan Army officials urged villagers to register their weapons in accordance with Afghan law.
Although Afghans are allowed one weapon and a limited amount of ammunition, according to Afghan National Army Lt. Pallawanna of the 3rd Coy, 1st Kandak, the Government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan requires all citizens of Afghanistan who own firearms to register them.
If a citizen is found in possession of an unregistered firearm or excess ammunition, the munitions can be confiscated by Afghan army, he said.
To demonstrate the legitimacy of his claims, Pallawanna asked the villagers to present their firearms for registration.
Initially only a few villagers presented their weapons, expecting the Afghan army to take the guns away. But after inspection of the firearms and recording of the serial numbers, the Afghan officer returned the guns to the owners.
Witnessing this, other villagers presented their firearms for registration taking comfort in the knowledge the weapon would be returned.
“This is the kind of activity that creates trust between villagers and the ANA,” said U.S. Army 2nd Lt. Joel Sage, 3rd Platoon leader. “And trust in the ANA ultimately leads to trust in GIRoA.”
