ZARANJ, Afghanistan – Afghan government officials and Marine officials traveled to the provincial governor’s compound in Zaranj, the capitol of Nimruz province, to take part in a youth shura, Jan. 18.
Nearly 300 young men and women were present at the shura. Many key speakers, such as the district governor, the provincial governor and the deputy minister of youth affairs took the podium to talk to the young men and women.
The purpose of the shura was to interact with local youths and describe to them how the future of Afghanistan rests in their hands.
This shura was part of an effort by the Ministry of Information and Culture to engage the youth of the nation and encourage them to become active in their government,” said Lt. Col. Michael Geffroy, officer in charge of Task Force Zaranj. “It was held to teach them about participation in the government, to encourage volunteerism and to discourage the use of narcotics. It also let the youth know that they are part of the nation and that they have an active role to play.”
According to Geffroy, with more than 68 percent of Afghanistan’s population comprised of young men and women between the ages of 14 through 30, understanding their needs is vital to the republic’s governance.
It is an effort to talk to a large portion of the countries population, the next generation of leaders and encourage them to educate themselves and to participate in the government.
“This was the tenth youth shura held to date. he goal of the Government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan and Regional Command Southwest is to hold youth shuras in all 34 provinces of Afghanistan.
“I think today’s meeting was a great success. It is not often that GIRoA officials get down into Nimruz province,” added Geffroy. They were able to hold the shura, hold a number of side meetings while there and we were able to maximize the amount of time that we spent there.”
