The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Galveston District, awarded a contract Jan. 11 to G.S.D. Trading USA Inc., a small business, in the amount of $278,600 to dredge the Texas City turning basin in Galveston County, Texas.
The contractor will use a clamshell dredge to remove approximately 12,000 cubic yards of shoal material from the turning basin.
“We exercised this option as part of a larger operations and maintenance contract, and it is the final section of work to be contracted to complete the deepening of the Texas City channel from 40 to 45 feet,” said Sharon Tirpak, a project manager with the Corps’ Galveston District. “This work will allow larger ships to navigate the channel to the Port of Texas City.”
The Texas City channel, which intersects the Houston/Galveston navigation channel to the east, serves the Port of Texas City, which in 2008 ranked 13th in the U.S. in tonnage volume, with 52.6 million short tons, according to the Corps’ Waterborne Commerce Statistics Center. The primary commodities that come through the port include crude oil, gasoline, diesel, jet fuel, intermediate chemicals and petroleum coke, according to the Statistics Center.
Work on the turning basin is scheduled to begin within several weeks and should be completed by early May 2011.
