NORFOLK, Va. – Sailors assigned to 2nd Fleet helped the homeless community in Norfolk, Va., during Norfolk’s Project Homeless Connect, Jan. 12.
Project Homeless Connect turned Norfolk’s Scope arena into a one-day, mega service site for assisting homeless adults, especially those staying on the streets, and the ability to connect with resources and services. This year’s Project Homeless Connect assisted 550 people with the help of 500 volunteers.
“This was a humbling experience to see how much I have versus what others do not have in our city,” said Petty Officer 1st Class Michael Lee, an aerographer's mate from Commander U.S. 2nd Fleet.
During the event the C2F sailors helped clients to get from one service area to another. Client support volunteers acted as guides, giving directions or escorting clients to the areas where they could get food, medical services, appointments, and much more.
“I helped James, who reminds me of my younger brother, and hopefully, I can help him get off the street,” said Lee.
Norfolk and San Francisco are the only two cities in the nation that host the Homeless Connect Project semi-annually.
“We are here to defeat homelessness not to manage it,” said Norfolk, Va., Mayor Paul Fraim.
This was the 10th semi-annual Project Homeless Connect held in Norfolk. During the event, homeless people were able to get free medical, dental, and eye exams; substance abuse and mental health counseling, legal services, sign up for food stamps and Social Security benefits, learn about employment, training, and housing options, obtain identification cards, legal assistance, food, and other giveaways.
Sailors from Portsmouth Naval Medical Center, USS Harry S. Truman, and USS Dwight D. Eisenhower also volunteered at the event.
