PAKTYA PROVINCE, Afghanistan – Afghan National Security Forces combined with the 615th Military Police Company to conduct a cordon-and-search mission of two known insurgent residences in the Chamkani District of Paktya province, which resulted in the discovery of the remnants of a homemade explosive lab and a weapons cache Dec. 14.
The searches were conducted by Afghan Uniformed Police with soldiers from the 615th MP Co. providing oversight during the operation. The AUP developed the intelligence, coordinated the planning, conducted the reconnaissance and executed the mission.
“We were confident because we had air and land support,” said AUP Sgt. Fazal, Chamkani AUP non-commissioned officer in charge. “Our mission was to find and arrest a suspicious [improvised explosive devise] maker... Although we didn’t capture him, we got his weapons.”
“The operation was completely Afghan-led,” said U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Kent Schooner of Gainesvill, Ga., a 615th MP squad leader. “The goal is for us to work ourselves out of the job.”
The Afghan Border Patrol in the Chamkani area worked with their coalition forces partner, Company B, 1st Battalion, 168 Infantry Regiment, to establish security during the operation.
“[The ABP] has a great group of junior officers,” said U.S. Army Sgt. Lucas Queck, Co. B., 1st Bn., 168th Inf. Regt., from Fontanelle, Iowa.
In order to facilitate continued ANSF progress, U.S. soldiers have to take a side seat and allow the ANSF to lead operations.
“You just have to sit back and watch,” said U.S. Army 1st Lt. Michael Broderick, 1st Bn., 168th Inf. Regt., platoon leader of Clive, Iowa.
Broderick said the proficiency with which the AUP planned and conducted this operation is a positive indication of the progress being made to improve security in Paktya province.
