MIAMI - U.S. Southern Command will inaugurate its new military headquarters Dec. 17 at 3:30 p.m. during a ribbon-cutting ceremony, marking the official start of operations at the new facility and a new phase in the command's history as a proud member of the south Florida community.
Air Force Gen. Douglas Fraser, SOUTHCOM commander, will preside over the ceremony, attended by command personnel and their families, as well as invited guests that include community leaders, former commanders and local consular generals.
The ceremony will have the participation of other south Florida based military organizations, including a U.S. Air Force F-16 fly-over from the 482nd Fighter Wing in Homestead Air Reserve Base and music performed by the Florida National Guard 13th Army Band from Pembroke Pines.
State-of-the-art planning and conference facilities at the headquarters will support engagement and cooperation activities with military and security forces from across the Americas, ranging from multinational humanitarian-assistance operations and military exercises to bilateral training and subject-matter-expert exchanges.
The new headquarters facility will also serve as a hub for U.S. military coordination with other federal agencies that directly and indirectly support U.S. defense, security and partnership-building activities with Latin America and the Caribbean.
The new headquarters will also house a newly-constructed child development, fitness and health-care centers to offer a variety of support services to command personnel, their families and eligible military ID card holders.
Approximately 2,300 personnel will work at the new SOUTHCOM headquarters, comprising all branches of the armed forces, 13 federal agencies and six Western Hemisphere nation.
SOUTHCOM is one of six Defense Department geographic unified commands and is responsible for U.S. military operations, cooperation and partnership-building in a region that includes 31 countries and 10 territories in the Caribbean, Central America and South America.
