FORT IRWIN, Calif. - Single soldiers from 1st Squadron, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, will be getting a taste of home this holiday season thanks to their Family Readiness Group.

The squadron’s FRG, with Joan Morschel, the Family Readiness Support Assistant for 1st Sqdn., 11th ACR, put together bags of cookies for the single Soldiers in their squadron, Dec. 7.

“We baked cookies for single Soldiers to give to them at their holiday parties,” Morschel said. “Since they are far away from home, we thought it might be a little piece of home for them to get some home-made cookies.”

Morschel and other FRG volunteers planned at least a month in advance and sent out invitations for spouses to get involved with the project. The spouses were advised to bring in 8 dozen cookies each.

“I baked cinnamon rolls, snicker doodles and sugar cookies,” said Ann Shealy, the FRG leader for India Battery, 1st Sqdn., 11th ACR. Shealy said she has only been an Army wife for a relatively short time and this was her first experience putting together something like this for Soldiers in her husband’s unit. “This is my first time; I’ve only been a spouse for two months. It was pretty good, I’m glad we were able to come out today.”

The roughly 30 volunteers put together almost 300 bags of cookies which were divided and distributed to each unit within the Ironhorse squadron. The spouses buzzed about the squadron’s conference room, reminiscent of assembly-line factory workers. With bags in hands, and for some, with babies too, the spouses moved down the line filling them with an assortment of cookies and other baked goods.

“It was a fantastic turnout, we have plenty of cookies left over, we have them all bagged and we’re done in record time,” Morschel said. “I think it’s a morale booster, I want to thank all my volunteers who came out and baked cookies, they all smell delicious and look beautiful … We are hoping to bring a little holiday cheer to our single Soldiers that are far from home with these bags of homemade baked goods.”
