    KABUL, Afghanistan – Numerous insurgents were killed during an International Security Assistance Force patrol in Kunar province and several weapons and drug caches were discovered by Afghan National Security Forces and coalition forces in northern and southern Afghanistan today.

    An ISAF patrol was engaged with rocket-propelled grenades by insurgents in Sar Kani District and called for air support. After gaining positive identification direction, air weapons team on scene engaged, killing numerous insurgents.

    Initial reports indicate no civilians were injured and no damage was reported in the operation.

    In northern and southern Afghanistan, during combined clearing operations in Kunduz, Kandahar, Khost and Helmand provinces, Afghan National Security Forces and ISAF found seven weapons, chemical explosive components and drugs caches. The caches consisted of two 122 mm rockets, 12 fragmentation grenades, 12 82 mm recoilless-rifle grenades, 45 82 mm mortar shells, four 120 mm mortar shells, one 60 mm mortar shell, one pressure plate, four rocket-propelled grenades, 22 rocket-propelled boosters, three AK-47s, 14 full AK-47 magazines, one chest rack, some ammunition belts, one 22 caliber gun with two full magazines. Coalition forces also found 200 14.5 mm rounds, 1,150 7.62 mm rounds, 500 12.7 mm rounds, 30 pounds (14 kilograms) of ammonium nitrate, one backpack with explosives, some flares, eight Afghan National Army uniforms, one remote controller, some radio and electrical components. In addition, combined forces detained several suspected insurgents related to the above weapons caches.

    During a separate clearing operation, combined forces found some medical supplies in a suspected insurgent compound in Zharay district, Kandahar province. The medical supplies consisted of 26 antibiotic bottles, 45 water solvents for antibiotic reagent, five bottles with 1,000 tablets of pain killer, 50 syringes, 26 medication packages, 48 intravenous fluid control kits, 36 cotton bandages and medical instructions.

    An Afghan National Security Forces and ISAF patrol discovered in Marjeh District, Helmand province a drug cache consisting of 220 pounds (100 kg) of hashish.

    The clearing operations were conducted without incident and the weapons from all provinces as well as the medical supplies and the drugs were taken into possession and will be destroyed.
