KABUL, Afghanistan – Soldiers from the military police platoon of Alpha Company, 1st Brigade Special Troops Battalion, 10th Mountain Division recently restored a soccer field and built a volleyball court for children in Balkh province.
Nicknamed the Mohawk platoon, the police platoon’s primary mission is to provide mentorship, training and logistics support to Afghan National Security Forces in Hairatan, a northern town that borders Uzbekistan.
On a daily basis, soldiers of the platoon travel through the village, often greeted by members of the community.
"They are always so excited to see us", said U.S. Army Cpl. Eric Fowlkes, a team leader with the Mohawks.
Each time the Mohawks roll out on a mission, they are continuously met by flocks of children who swarm their vehicles looking for treats, toys or clothing soldiers may bring.
Recently the platoon took the opportunity restored the neglected soccer field, to help develop a project the community could not only be proud of, but would also benefit children.
"Hairatan has a proud heritage of producing some of the best soccer players in Balkh province", said Odaidullah, the new athletic director for the city. When the athletes of this small northern town heard their soccer field was to be restored, the teams came out in droves.
Along with the soccer field, the Mohawk platoon built a volleyball court nearby. Teams were set up and playing within minutes after the opening of the court.
