MARINE CORPS AIR STATION CHERRY POINT, N.C. - The Pine Knoll Shores Red Hat Ladies toured Cherry Point and visited Marine Transport Squadron 1, Nov 5.
VMR-1 Marines set up a static display of an HH-46E search and rescue helicopter to give the ladies an up close look at the tools Pedro uses to help support the Marines and the community.
“We’ll explain the aircraft and let them know what our mission is and how we go about doing the mission,” said Cpl. Bruce D. Barner, a crew chief with VMR-1.
The squadron’s mission includes search and rescue for 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing pilots, civilian boaters and planes in distress, fighting forest fires and transporting patients to hospitals when civilian aircraft are unable to fly.
“I think it’s good because it gives them the opportunity to see that we enjoy doing what we do and gives them a sense of confidence in us doing our job,” added Barner.
Barner gave the tour group a walk-through of the helicopter and showed them the search and rescue gear and how it works.
“They did a marvelous job, and we certainly enjoyed it,” said Pauly Brown, queen mother of Pine Knoll Shore’s Red Hat Ladies. “We all live in Pine Knoll Shores on the beach, so we see them fly over two times a day. We’re very happy that they’re here for us. We benefit from their mission.”
VMR-1 Marines have taken on more than 60 non-2nd MAW missions and saved more than 50 lives so far in 2010. VMR-1 covers an area from Elizabeth City, N.C., to Charleston, S.C., for search and rescue operations.
“We let the people know that we’ll support the public in any way that we can,” said Maj. Jason T. Vrable, the officer in charge of search and rescue for VMR-1. “Our primary mission is to support the tactical air support for the station, but 99 percent of the missions are actually to support the community.”
