    The Quantico Reserve Support Unit

    VA, UNITED STATES

    11.04.2010

    Story by Cpl. Tyler Hlavac

    Marine Forces Reserve (MARFORRES)

The Quantico Reserve Support Unit has a unique mission. As one of only five RSU’s across the entire Marine Corps, Quantico RSU’s responsibility is to provide administrative, training, and logistical support to Reserve Component individuals and units serving aboard MCB Quantico. Their mission makes them a vital asset to Marine Forces Reserve as a whole.

Currently, the RSU has several units from 4th Marine Logistics Group on deck for exercise Quantico Viper 7.

The Continental Marine sat down with Gunnery Sgt. Jason Hart, RSU operation’s chief, to explain the unique capabilities that the RSU has to offer, as well as offering some insight into the RSU itself.

CM: What would you say is the mission of the RSU?

Hart: Two missions, one is personnel processing center which is per-deployment administration.

They serve as an S-1 (administrative section) so any individual augments mobilize and demobilize here. My side is the operations side which is the training of all reserve units (in the area); we’re the liaison for any outside unit that is not a base tenant. We facilitate training between the base and the unit.

CM: What is the duty status of the Marines who work in for the RSU?

Hart: We have two active duty, two active reserve officers, four civilian employees and the rest are a mixture of ADOS, drilling Marines and mobilized Marines.

CM: What major training events or exercises does the RSU offer? What is your bread and butter?

Hart: I would say rifle ranges and our simulators. We coordinate ranges with Weapons Battalion (Quantico-based unit)...our HEAT (Humvee Egress Assistance Trainer) Trainer and MET (MRAP Egress Trainer) get a lot of usage, and our VCCT, which is our Virtual Convoy Combat Trainer… all of those get a high amount,…a high amount of usage. And those would be what I would consider our bread and butter.

    CM: What is Quantico Viper?

Hart: Quantico Viper is the name we have given to a group exercise for 4th Marine Logistics Group for their pre-deployment training; they do it twice a year. They knock out gas mask, swim and rifle qualifications…law of war, IED (improvised explosive device) classes is what they generally do.

CM: What makes RSU unique as a unit?

Hart: A couple of things. The number one this is you have a Marine from everywhere. It’s not all infantrymen, we got supply guys, a heavy equipment guy, a LAV (light armored vehicle) guy, all in one roof and they are from every state. A regular reserve unit, everybody has the same MOS (military occupational specialty) and are from the same state. When you here you learn about different experiences in the Marine Corps all the time.
