MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. – Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune is home to three winners of the 2010 Armed Forces Recreation Services awards. Two employees with Marine Corps Community Services and one area commanding officer were recognized for their outstanding contributions to the base and its service members and families.
The awards presented were the John ‘Pat’ Harden Practitioner Award, Commander’s Award and the Lifetime Service Award. Each award represents the extensive work put forth by the recipients and honored their dedication to support service members.
The John ‘Pat’ Harden Practitioner Award is given for having worked in armed forces recreation at the operations level for more than 7 years. Jobs include planning, producing and executing programs in direct contact with the participants. Tasks also include mobilizing volunteers, decorating, coordinating entertainment, food, publicity, and working day and night in preparation for programs.
The recipient from Camp Lejeune was Victoria Salazar, a recreation specialist with MCCS who works at Midway Park.
Salazar said that she has her friends Patsy and Shirley to thank for having made it this far.
“I’m grateful that they took me under their wings and taught me everything I know,” said Salazar. “I wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for them.”
Her friends said that although they taught her as much as they could if it wasn’t for her dedication and love of helping service members she wouldn’t had stood out.
“She is a sponge and absorbs everything we’ve taught her. There’s no stopping her and she has the potential to go as far as she wants,” said Shirley Weaver, supervisory recreational specialist with MCCS. “She puts Marines and their families first and foremost and that is why I nominated her.”
Another award that was handed out was the Commander’s Award. This award is given to area commanders who are not necessarily recreation professionals, but advocate leadership and improved quality of life for service members.
The recipient for this was Col. Richard Fullerton, the commanding officer for Marine Corps Combat Service Support Schools, Camp Johnson, is credited with improving the quality of life for many Marines.
The third recipient was Sidney Meyerson who was honored with the Lifetime Service Award, although she was not present. Meyerson, who works for MCCS received the award for her unparalleled commitment to both her job and the organizational mission.
