MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. – The day was hot and humid, as a small group of excited Marines returned from a seven-month deployment to Afghanistan. They stared out of the tinted windows of the van trying to capture a familiar face. When the van stopped, they couldn’t disembark fast enough.
All the laughter and excited voices were replaced with a complete silence as the van was pulling into the 14 Area barracks parking lot here, they were nervous and anxious to see their loved ones.
Once the van came to a complete stop, they rushed out of the door and headed straight over to their friends and families, whom they haven’t seen for quite some time. Marines and sailors with Headquarters and Service Company, 1st Marine Logistics Group (Forward), re-deployed from Afghanistan to stateside.
“I’m so glad that we’re finally home,” said Petty Officer 2nd Class Christopher D. Herrera, religious program specialist with H&S Company, 1st MLG (FWD). “All I want to do right now is to call my kids and be with my friends and family.”
Herrera, 35, from Killeen, Texas, was greeted by his friends upon his arrival. They wasted no time; his friends helped him load his gear into a vehicle and they were gone in a flash.
Service members were given a few days off so they can re-adjust to the way things are stateside and take some well-deserved time off.
“Now that we’re back, we’re going to continue to train and prepare ourselves for future deployments,” said Herrera. “But for now, I just want to take a hot shower, eat at my favorite places and enjoy the time I have with my friends and family. The rest can wait.”
