    Weapon caches found in eastern, southern Afghanistan

    KABUL, Afghanistan – Afghan National Army and International Security Assistance Forces discovered weapons and improvised explosive device components in seven southern and eastern Afghanistan locations over the past two days.

    The weapon caches were found in Kandahar , Uruzgan and Kunar provinces and consisted of three 64 mm mortars, one 65 mm mortar, two 82 mm shells, three 57 mm shells, 25 rocket-propelled grenades, 11 fragmentation high-explosive rounds, 1,800 7.62 mm rounds and one anti-personnel mine.

    Combined forces also discovered several IED components consisting of 31 pressure plates, nine batteries, three blasting caps and 150 pounds of homemade explosives in Helmand province.

    Also in Kandahar, an Afghan Army patrol found a large IED component cache consisting of 30 directional anti-personnel mines, multiple weapons and ammunitions.

    All caches were taken into possession and will be destroyed.

    “The effective partnership between Afghan National Security Forces and ISAF is improving our efforts aimed at disrupting insurgent activities, day and night,” said U.S. Army Col. Rafael Torres, ISAF Joint Command Combined Joint Operations Center director. “Removing these dangerous weapons from insurgent hands is important to help secure a stable and peaceful Afghanistan.”
