CAMP ARIFJAN, Kuwait – The 1st Sustainment Command (Theater) said “farewell” to the 18 petroleum warriors of the 475th Quartermaster Group in an awards ceremony at the ASG-Kuwait Headquarters, Nov. 12.
Led by Col. Donald Okura and Sgt. Maj. Perry Wenzel, this team represents the oldest Petroleum Group in the United States Army which until, 1992 was the only petroleum group in the Army. As the Sub-Area Petroleum Office or “SAPO” for U.S. Central Command, the 475th serves as the primary staff of petroleum logistics experts.
The 1st TSC Commander Maj. Gen. Kenneth S. Dowd; Deputy Commander, Brig. Gen. Nick Tooliatos, and Command Sgt. Maj. Danfert Espinal Jr. bore witness and served as the official guests to this small but meaningful ceremony.
The 475th QM’s 11 month deployment supported both Operation Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom simultaneously, contributing to the historic drawdown and the subsequent transition into Operation New Dawn.
“These fuel specialists ensured a new standard in theater-level fuel control through quality planning, aggressive management, and quality assurance,” said Dowd.
The team completed over 31 lab certifications, including 11 new labs in Afghanistan and the first deployment of Petroleum Quality Analysis System Enhanced mobile labs.
“Through it all, the 475th Quartermaster Group provided that necessary life blood of the battlefield-petroleum,” said Dowd.
The ceremony concluded with the presentation of several awards marking the completion of this reserve unit’s tour of duty and their re-deployment home to Pennsylvania.
