NORFOLK, Va. - Operations Specialists within Commander, U.S. Second Fleet’s area of responsibility attended a symposium at Second Fleet’s Mitscher Center Nov. 9 – 10 to provide fleet operational training for the East Coast waterfront.

The symposium mirrors Commander, U.S. Second Fleet Vice Adm. Daniel P. Holloway’s focus areas: conducting fleet operations in a safe, effective, and efficient manner, continuing to build and maintain maritime partnerships with allies, and being a joint task force capable headquarters.

“The goal is to better align the waterfront by having all our ships and commands using the same practices and sharing the same information,” said Senior Chief Petty Officer Tim Goss, Second Fleet’s Fleet Command Center leading chief petty officer.

The symposium involved presentations highlighting specific updates and changes within the OS rating.

“This is something new we’re trying,” said Chief Petty Officer Sean Gravesande, Second Fleet’s Future Plans leading chief petty officer. “The information we’re discussing is about how to choose orders, updates to the OS Personnel Qualification Standards, and setting up special equipment like the Maritime Global Command Control System. We’re trying to help all OS’s better their career.”

Petty Officer 1st Class Erica Wilson of commander, Carrier Strike Group Two, enjoyed the symposium because of the face-to-face aspect that is sometimes lost with a teleconference.

“Symposiums like this help improve waterfront cohesiveness, and it brings OS’s together in a way that puts us all on the same page,” said Wilson.

According to Goss, he hopes the information will be used to move the OS rating further in the Navy.

“We’re hoping the service members here can relay this new information back to their chain of command, so they too are up-to-date on scheduling, service commitment, and training requirements that affect a ship’s Operations Department,” said Goss.
