Misawa Air Base Assists in Patient Transfer

MISAWA CITY, Japan – Service members from Naval Air Facility Misawa and the 35th Medical group assisted Misawa City Hospital in a patient transfer, Nov. 5.

Misawa City opened its new hospital last week and requested military assistance in moving patients to the new facility.

The base provided more than 20 medical personnel and two ambulances to assist in transporting about 80 patients. The Japan Air-Self Defense Force also contributed to the transfer.

35th Medical Group Deputy Commander Lt. Col. Dean Prentice said they were glad to be able to assist the local community.

"We have a great relationship with the Misawa City Hospital," said Prentice. "They have helped us so much before with patient care, so we were glad to be able to help them as they move to this wonderful new facility."

Misawa City Hospital sees patients from 35th Medical Group for tests and procedures the base doesn't have the capability to provide, like CT scans.

The move also gave service members an opportunity to see their Japanese counterparts in action.

Petty Officer 2nd Class Chamunorwa Chimhau, hospital corpsman, said it was personally rewarding to assist in the move.

"It was a unique chance to not only help out and make a difference in someone's life," said Chimhau, "but also a great opportunity to see the professionalism of our Japanese health care counterparts."
