FORT HOOD, Texas - As a new year draws near and a possible deployment with it, soldiers of the 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, continue to increase the depths of their training at every opportunity.
That chance came Oct. 25-29 as Black Jack troopers conducted a Command Post Exercise event, here, on Fort Hood, Texas.
The event was the third in a series of exercises that have taken place on Fort Hood during the past three months. Each exercise becomes more involved than the last, said Maj. Scott Walton, the assistant brigade operations officer.
During the exercise seven battalions and sections from the brigade integrated all their experience and became completely familiar with a full spectrum of operations in a field environment, he said.
“It helps the soldiers to have confidence in their digital systems and battle drills,” said Walton.
That confidence goes into building stronger brigade standard operating procedures, improves reaction time to different scenarios that may take place on the battlefield and builds teamwork, he said.
“The whole staff is together, focused on one key goal,” said Walton.
As a whole, the staff worked together well. The exercise involved every soldier from the highest level to the lowest.
Never having used the digital systems involved in the exercise, Pfc. Timothy Wilson, a Williamsport, Pa., native and a forward observer for the brigade, said the exercise was very effective and what he has learned will make his job a lot easier.
“I’m more prepared. This [CPX] helped out immensely,” he said.
With more in-depth simulations and more freedom in decision making, Walton said the training improved the capabilities of smaller sections like his.
Walton’s was not the only section that found the training to be a success. Capt. Matthew Martinez, the brigade’s provost marshal said his expertise was greatly enhanced because of the exercise and capabilities of the equipment.
The exercise challenged him and helped him discover how to put together what belongs and push what doesn’t to the side. He said he enjoyed being integrated with other sections in the brigade and was proud of the work his non-commissioned officers did.
The leadership, NCO’s and soldiers made the CPX a success and properly prepared them for any type of mission. The next scheduled training event for the 2nd BCT will be a Joint Readiness Training Center rotation early next year.
