ZABUL, Afghanistan - Shop owners in a village in Zabul province initiated a shura with the Nawbahar Afghan National Police to discuss Taliban presence in the vicinity of the local bazaar Oct. 23 at the ANP compound in Nawbahar district.
Insurgents have been preventing supply trucks from coming within five kilometers of the bazaar.
The ANP commander engaged the locals and provided strategies and tactics to deter insurgent activity.
As a group, the local villagers decided to ban motorcycles from the district to thwart insurgent activity.
The villagers are also identifying all illegal shops in the district in order to shut them down.
Soldiers from the Afghan National Army’s 1st Battalion, 2nd Brigade, 205th Corps and sailors from Naval Special Warfare Group were on hand to advise and assist the Nawbahar ANP during the shura.
“This shura was an opportunity to discuss, with the local populace, Taliban activity in the area,” said a spokesman for the Combined Joint Special Operations Task Force-Afghanistan. “The initiative by these villagers to connect with the ANP for this shura shows they have faith in and are willing to provide information to the ANA, ANP and Coalition forces to help build and strengthen their community.”
