ORUZGAN, Afghanistan -- Members of the Afghan Social Outreach Program and Afghanistan’s Ministry of Education provided advice and support to Gizab officials, Oct. 6, in Oruzgan province.

ASOP, a United States Agency for International Development program, supports the International Directorate of Local Governance to develop district-level community councils in the absence of formally elected district councils.

Upon arrival, the teams from ASOP and MOE met with the Gizab sub-governor to discuss ways in which to improve local governance and education programs in the district.

The visit continued the next day with the ASOP team providing advice and counsel on how to efficiently and effectively run a shura as well as on how to contact and receive government assistance on issues from key officials in Oruzgan and Kabul. Another key aspect of the visit was the official recognition, by ASOP officials, of 40 members of the Gizab shura.

The MoE team meanwhile conducted an assessment of the local Gizab school while classes were in session. The team left Gizab with a long list of resource requests from school officials that will improve the overall quality of the education system in the area.
