CAMP LEATHERNECK, Afghanistan— Marines of 1st Marine Division (Forward) paid tribute to the lives and service of their fallen brothers during a Colors and Memorial ceremony at Camp Leatherneck, Oct. 10.

Directly in front of the flagpoles and at the epicenter of the ceremony, was the 1st MarDiv(Fwd) Memorial monument. The monument will stand proudly in front of the division headquarters building as a daily reminder of the ultimate sacrifice made by our fallen heroes of the division, to include the soldiers of the British 40 Commando and the 31st Georgian Battalion.

Less than a month ago the 1st MarDiv(Fwd) held the very first ceremony honoring 83 division service members killed-in-action since assuming responsibility, March 20, as the ground combat element of Task Force Leatherneck. Once again 1st MarDiv(Fwd) pays tribute to 13 more men lost since Sept. 17, hanging their dog tags on the memorial monument.

The monument now has 96 dog tags of the Marines, sailors and coalition partners, who gave all for their country, and the safety and security of the Afghan people.

Thirteen Marines with 1st MarDiv(Fwd) marched forward to honor the 13 Marines by placing their dog tags on the monument.

In honor of those killed-in-action, each of their names was read off, followed by a ring of the bell.

“This was a big eye opener for me. I am not the one out there getting shot at and risking my life,” said Noemi Alfaro, 19, from Chicago, 1st MarDiv(Fwd) staff secretary administration clerk. “I was very honored to be placing one of the dog tags of a Marine who gave his life for his country, on the monument.”

Following the ceremony, the American, Afghan, and Marine Corps flags were lowered one by one, as two trumpet players from the 1st MarDiv (Fwd) band, played, “Taps.”

"This ceremony reminded us all about those who gave their lives for our country," said 1st Sgt. Willie Peterson, 1st MarDiv(Fwd) Headquarters Detachment first sergeant. "Their bravery and courage will live forever, as their sacrifice has provided us all with another day of freedom."
