KABUL, Afghanistan - Multiple intelligence sources and tips from local citizens led Afghan National Security and International Security Assistance Forces to the location of an insurgent courier vehicle in Kandahar province Tuesday.

When the joint patrol attempted to stop the suspected vehicle, they were fired upon by insurgents operating the vehicle. Afghan National Security and International Security Assistance Forces returned fire, killing several insurgents.

During a search of the vehicle the combined force found 760 kilograms of processed heroin, 250 kilograms of hash, 100 kilograms of wet opium, 20 remote controlled improvised explosive devices, five IED initiator packs and four AK-47s with ammunition.

The target of the operation is a known transporter and facilitator of lethal aid and narcotics, often travelling the smuggler routes from Baram Chah north to Malmand Chinnah.

All narcotics, weapons and the vehicle were destroyed on site.
