PARWAN PROVINCE, Afghanistan – The women’s empowerment coordinator with the Kentucky Agribusiness Development Team and a member of the Task Force Wolverine Female Engagement team met with the Parwan Director of Women’s Affairs to discuss a chicken and a beekeeping project for Afghan women in the province Sept. 28.
The initial goal of the chicken project is to provide 25 Afghan women with nine hens and one rooster each to start. The project would also provide a one-week class that would cover the proper care of the chickens. The women would learn how to properly vaccinate the chickens against influenza, provide proper nutrition for the chickens, and market the eggs.
“The training is important to the success of this project,” said U.S. Army Maj. Bobby Mayes, Kentucky ADT women’s empowerment coordinator and Lawrenceburg, Ky., resident. “In the past with similar projects, the chickens have been too young and have not survived.”
The second project discussed was the beekeeping project where each Afghan woman who participates would get one complete beehive. The women would learn how to care for the hive and use it to grow more beehives. The honey would eventually be sold for additional income for their family.
These types of projects are critical for long-term success.
“If we can succeed with these smaller projects then bigger projects can also succeed,” said Mayes.
The projects require several meetings, coordination and time, but those involved feel they are on the right track.
"These projects that are intended for women look very promising; they are well thought out and well planed,” said U.S. Army Sfc. Maureen Houston, a Female Engagement Team member with the 86th Infantry Brigade Combat Team and a Saint Albans, Vt., resident.
Mayes is presenting the same projects to the Kapisa DOWA with the hopes that the Parwan and Kapisa DOWA can work together to ensure both of their provinces are successful with these projects.
