FORT LEONARD WOOD, Mo. — The Missouri Department of Conservation will be hosting a mentored dove hunt for first-time dove hunters Sept. 26, 2026.
According to Fort Leonard Wood Conservation Law Enforcement Officer Lt. Eric Magoon, this mentored dove hunt is specifically for 10 individuals ages 18 to 34 who have never harvested a dove.
Dwight Warnke, MDC conservation educator and program lead, emphasized the hunt is an event organized for Fort Leonard Wood service members, their families and Department of the Army civilians.
According to Warnke, participants will learn more about dove management at Fort Leonard Wood Police Station building between 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., Sept. 25. And registered dove hunt participants must attend the pre-hunt management program on Sept. 25 to attend the mentored dove hunt the following day.
Magoon said MDC will be providing transportation to and from the hunting location in Phelps County Sept. 26. The MDC van will depart from the Fort Leonard Wood Police Station parking lot at 6 a.m. and return from the dove hunt by 1 p.m.
Fort Leonard Wood’s Police Station is located at 261E West 19th Street.
“Hunters will need to procure all appropriate permitting and licenses at their own expense and travel to the (Fort Leonard Wood Police Station),” Magoon said, and participants will need to have their Hunter Education Certificate, Small Game Hunting Permit and Migratory Bird Hunting Permit.
Warnke said all shotguns, shotshells, earplugs and safety glasses will be provided by MDC.
“If the participant chooses to bring their own 12-gauge or 20-gauge shotgun, MDC will provide the shotshells,” Warnke added.
Magoon noted participants must have proper firearm paperwork for transport within Fort Leonard Wood, “and gate clearance if planning to use their own shotgun for this event.”
