FORT BRAGG, N.C.— Womack Army Medical Center has been reverified as a Level III trauma center by the American College of Surgeons and designated by the state of North Carolina, allowing the hospital to continue delivering trauma care while supporting military medical readiness.
The designation, which is renewed every three years, reflects Womack’s ability to provide trauma care for injured patients and stabilize those who require transfer to a higher-level facility.
“As a hospital, Womack is committed to being a high performing healthcare partner in the Mid-Carolina region. Level III Trauma Center verification reinforces that commitment,” said Col. Sean Reilly, Chief Medical Officer. “Army Medicine must be able to deliver combat ready medical forces with expertise in trauma care.This is a core line of effort for us, both for our combat preparation and support to the Fort Bragg community.”
The joint site visit included reviewers from the American College of Surgeons and the state of North Carolina, who assessed patient care protocols, hospital policies and trauma coordination across the hospital.
During the two-day review, evaluators audited clinical cases, performance improvement initiatives, and community outreach programs such as Stop the Bleed. They also toured key clinical areas to evaluate interdepartmental trauma response workflows. Evaluators noted strengths across Womack’s clinical capabilities, issuing only minor recommendations for policy updates.
“A huge part of being a trauma center is performance improvement,” said Jennifer Carney, Womack’s trauma program manager. “Are we performing at a level where we will have the best outcomes for our patients? And if not, how did we identify it, how did we fix it, and how do we make sure that it stays fixed?”
Carney emphasized that trauma verification directly supports total-force readiness across multiple specialties.
“It comes down to readiness for your military medical force. And it’s not just your surgeons, it’s your nurses, it’s your techs, it’s the blood bank,” she said. “Caring for trauma patients provides valuable real-world experience for providers while reinforcing Womack’s role as a partner in the regional trauma system.
With reverification complete, the trauma program is already focused on the next three-year cycle by closing current performance improvement projects and beginning new ones to sustain optimal trauma readiness. For more information about Womack Army Medical Center visit https://womack.tricare.mil.
