BAER FIELD AIR NATIONAL GUARD BASE, Ind – After 40 years of service, countless deployments and a career that took him farther than he ever imagined, U.S. Air Force Brig. Gen. Mark Miller is closing the book on his time in the Indiana Air National Guard. Miller marked the occasion during her retirement ceremony Sept. 13, 2026 at the 122nd Fighter Wing, Fort Wayne, Indiana.
When Miller enlisted in 1986, his plan was relatively simple: join the Air Force to pay for college and build a future. Becoming a general officer was nowhere on the horizon. Looking back at the young man who grew up in a rural Indiana town who would raise his right hand to serve one day, Miller said it is difficult to believe he ever made that decision.
“It was incredible that I would ever even join the military,” Miller said. “How does anybody like that ever move up to be a general officer?”
But early on in his career, there were signs of the leader he would become. During technical training, Miller became a student leader, eventually rising to the position of head student leader known as a “red rope.” Along the way, he began thinking seriously about the kind of life and career he wanted to build. One day, he sat down and wrote out his goals. Four decades later, he still has that list.
At the center of those goals was a simple philosophy: go to college, work hard and surround himself with good people. Throughout his career, Miller found mentors, parental figures and friends among the people he served alongside. Many helped shape the leader he would become, and he credits them along with the countless Airmen who shared the journey and helped him reach this point.
Above all, Miller credits God and his family for the success and longevity of his career. Forty years of service brought deployments, challenges, opportunities and responsibilities he could not have envisioned when he enlisted to help pay for school. Yet through every chapter, the people around him remained a constant.
Now, as he prepares to enter the next season of his life, Miller leaves the Indiana Air National Guard with gratitude for the journey and the people who made it possible. And perhaps fittingly for someone who once wrote down his goals as a young Airman, he is already looking ahead to what comes next. As he put it during his retirement ceremony: “We’re going to Disney World!”
