October marks Domestic Violence Awareness Month, a nationwide observance aimed at increasing awareness, supporting survivors and strengthening community prevention efforts. The monthlong recognition encourages education, open dialogue and collective action to promote healthy relationships and safer communities. Fort Knox will host several events throughout October to highlight available resources and reaffirm the installation’s commitment to preventing domestic abuse.
A Mile in Their Shoes (Oct. 1–31) Fort Knox community members are invited to participate in the A Mile in Their Shoes event, a self‑paced walk or run available throughout October. Participants may record their name and mileage on purple ribbons available at Otto, Gammon, Natcher and Smith fitness centers, as well as Army Community Service. The activity is designed to raise awareness and honor individuals affected by domestic violence.
Community Proclamation (Oct. 7) The installation will host a Domestic Violence Awareness Month proclamation from 10 to 11 a.m. Oct. 7 at the Saber & Quill Catering and Conference Center, located at 1118 E. Chaffee Ave. The event will take place during Newcomer Orientation and will include remarks from Garrison leaders reaffirming Fort Knox’s commitment to fostering a safe and supportive community.
In Their Shoes Training (Oct. 21) The Family Advocacy Program will conduct In Their Shoes training from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oct. 21 at the Sadowski Center, located at 6607 Wilson Road. The interactive session simulates real‑world barriers faced by individuals experiencing domestic violence. The event, which is open to the public, is a good opportunity to learn more about local resources available to families. Fort Knox Soldiers and civilian employees can receive credit for their annual FAP training by attending. Registration is required.
Purple Thursday (Oct. 22) Community members are encouraged to wear purple Oct. 22 in recognition of Purple Thursday. The day is intended to show support for survivors, raise awareness and unite the community in a visible stand against domestic violence. Purple is recognized nationally as the color of domestic violence awareness.
